Saskatoon Island Provincial Park was established in 1932, making it one of Alberta's first provincial parks. The park has also been a federal Migratory Bird Sanctuary since 1948. Located just 20 minutes west of Grande Prairie, the park’s mix of forests, wetlands, shrublands and native prairie provide habitat for a variety of plants and animals. The park is just over 100 hectares in size and is home to a large number of grassland, forest and lakeside birds, including the Trumpeter Swan. The park is situated on an isthmus (land bridge) between two lakes - Saskatoon Lake and Little Lake. The lakes are not suitable for swimming due to low water levels and thick vegetation; however, they are great places to watch waterfowl, canoe or kayak.
